Fear, Repentance, and Divine Justice

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1633
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man who weeps from the fear of Allah will never enter Hellfire, unless milk could return to its udder. The dust in the way of Allah will never combine with the smoke of Hell.”

This Hadith emphasizes the immense value of sincere fear and consciousness of Allah. A believer who genuinely fears Allah for their sins, regrets past mistakes, and turns back to Him with sincerity will be forgiven. The weeping is not a license to commit sins freely – it must be genuine remorse and awareness of Allah’s majesty. True fear of Allah leads to humility, reflection, and moral correction.

It highlights:

  • Remembrance and fear of Allah: Even without regular ritual prayer, the heart that trembles from awareness of Allah and His justice is protected from Hellfire.
  • Not a blanket pardon: Major intentional sins like murder, adultery, or oppression require their due rights or prescribed punishment. Allah’s forgiveness applies particularly to sins done by mistake, ignorance, or unintentional acts.
  • Sacrifice in Allah’s cause: The Hadith’s mention of “dust in the way of Allah” reminds believers that even small acts of striving in Allah’s path are immensely rewarded and shielded from Hell’s torment.

Example: A person who realizes their past wrongdoing – say, dishonesty, minor theft, or anger that harmed others — sincerely repents, feels remorse, and remembers Allah in fear, they earn His protection. This does not excuse ongoing major crimes or neglect of obligations; those still require justice and accountability.

Quranic Context

📖Quran 4:17
“Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”

📖Quran 39:53
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’

  • For non-Muslims, sins committed out of ignorance or lack of guidance can be forgiven when they accept Tawheed sincerely.

📖Qur’an 4:31
“If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [Paradise].

1. Major Sins

Major sins are severe transgressions that carry significant punishment in Islam. Examples include:

  • Murder (Qatl)
  • Adultery / Fornication (Zina)
  • Theft
  • Drinking alcohol or taking intoxicants
  • Oppression or injustice

Required Punishment

For major sins, Islam prescribes specific punishments:

  • Murder: The victim’s heirs have the right to seek Qisas (retribution) – the killer may be executed. However, if the victim’s family forgives, the punishment is lifted, and the final judgment rests with Allah.
  • Adultery: Punishment is prescribed according to the Shariah (for married individuals, 100 lashes or stoning in certain contexts).
  • Theft: The punishment includes amputation of the hand if conditions are met, Punishment for Theft

Murder and Forgiveness

📖Quran 2:178-179
“O you who have believed, prescribed for you is Qisas (legal retribution) for those murdered — the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if the killer is forgiven by the victim’s family, then grant them recompense and let it be fair. This is a concession from your Lord and a mercy. Whoever transgresses after this, We will give him a painful punishment.”

This verse shows that even for grave sins like murder, Allah allows mercy and forgiveness if the victim’s family chooses to forgive. The ultimate judgment still belongs to Allah
