Equal Opportunity and Knowledge

📖Sahih Muslim 817 a
‘Amir b. Wathila reported that Nafi’ b. ‘Abd al-Harith met ‘Umar at ‘Usfan, and ‘Umar had employed him as collector in Mecca. He (Umar) said to him (Nafi’): “Whom have you appointed as collector over the people of the valley?” He said: “Ibn Abza.” He said: “Who is Ibn Abza?” He said: “He is one of our freed slaves.” He (Umar) said: “So you have appointed a freed slave over them?” He said: “He is well versed in the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Great, and he is well versed in the commandments and injunctions (of the Shari’ah).” ‘Umar said: “By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.”

This hadith crushes the illusion of superiority based on race or social status. A freed slave was entrusted with authority—not because of bloodline, but because of his knowledge of the Qur’an and the Shari’ah. Umar ibn al-Khattab didn’t oppose it once he knew the man was qualified, instead he recalled the words of the Prophet ï·ș: “By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.” Meaning: The Qur’an is the scale by which people are raised or brought low—not lineage, not wealth, not reputation, This also proves that everything desirable in the sight of Allah, honor, leadership, spiritual elevation, and guidance, is determined by one’s knowledge and sincere following of the Qur’an. Nothing else matters. Not academic degrees. Not elite social circles. Not national identity. Anyone who truly understands and follows the Qur’an knows that these are the only qualities that carry weight. These alone are considered desirable in Islam.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:13
O mankind! We created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
→ Righteousness, not race, defines honor in the eyes of Allah.

📖Quran 35:32
Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and of them is he who is moderate, and of them is he who is foremost in good deeds by the permission of Allah. That is the great bounty.
→ Those who uphold the Qur’an are chosen and honored by Allah, regardless of status.

📖Quran 20:124
But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, then We will raise him blind on the Day of Judgment.
→ Turning away from the Qur’an leads to humiliation—in this life and the next.

In Islam, it’s not where you came from—it’s how much the Qur’an shapes your life.
