Do Not Curse Roosters
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5101
Zayd ibn Khalid reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not disparage the rooster, as it wakes you up for prayer.”
The Prophet ﷺ reminded believers not to despise or harm the rooster, for even its crowing carries a purpose. In his time, its call was a natural reminder for prayer. Even today, the rooster’s sound at dawn should be seen as a natural wake-up call rather than a disturbance. Instead of reacting with anger or hatred, a Muslim should recognize its role as part of Allah’s creation.
How to view it wisely:
- Reminder for prayer – its crowing often comes at dawn, the time of Fajr.
- Natural alarm – even without technology, it signals the start of a new day.
- Respect for creation – every creature has a reason for existence, including the rooster.
- Avoid harm – do not kill or mistreat it out of annoyance.
- See purpose, not disruption – its sound is part of divine order, not meaningless noise.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 24:41
Do you not see that Allah is glorified by whomever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with wings outspread? Each one knows its own prayer and glorification, and Allah is Knowing of what they do.
📖Quran 6:38
There is no creature on the earth or bird flying with its wings except that they are communities like you. We have not neglected anything in the Book. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
