Bathroom, Seeking Allah’s Refuge Before Entering
📖Sunan Abi Dawud 4
Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the toilet, he used to say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You.” In another narration: “I seek refuge in Allah from male and female devils.”
Why Seek Refuge Before Entering the Toilet?
- Presence of Devils (Shayateen and Jinn):
Toilets are considered impure places where the remembrance of Allah is generally avoided. Such places are attractive to jinn, including both male and female, who dwell in filthy or neglected areas. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek protection from their harm before entering.
- The Word “Devil” (Shaytan) – Its Broader Meaning:
In Islam, the term Shaytan (devil) does not refer only to Iblis. - Iblis is the chief of devils who disobeyed Allah and vowed to mislead mankind.
- However, the Qur’an uses the term Shayateen (plural) for every evil being – whether jinn or human – that encourages sin or harm.
- Why “Male and Female Devils”?
The hadith mentions both male and female devils because jinn have genders and reproduce. They exist in large numbers and often reside in filthy places. - Human Disrespect:
When you enter the toilet, you are in a vulnerable state. If someone knowingly disturbs you or tries to spy on you, this is an act of disrespect and evil – similar to the behavior of devils. In this sense, the term “devil” can apply to any human who behaves wickedly.
If a person knows you are in the restroom yet still tries to annoy or harm you, they are acting like a devil because Islam forbids such indecent behavior.
📖Surah Al-An‘am 6:112
And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion.
1. Test of Faith and Obedience
- Life is a test. Allah appointed these enemies to distinguish who truly follows the Prophet and who follows their desires.
- Without opposition, there would be no real challenge. Guidance becomes meaningful when falsehood exists as a contrast.
2. Free Will Principle
- Allah does not force anyone to become evil. He appoints as “enemies” those who already chose arrogance, disbelief, and rebellion (like Iblis and corrupt humans).
- Example: Iblis refused to bow to Adam by his own choice. Similarly, humans who become devils do so by following evil paths willingly.
3. Purpose of Balance
- Truth must exist alongside falsehood for people to consciously choose the right path.
- If there were no evil forces, following the truth would be automatic – not a test.
4. To Expose Hypocrisy and Strengthen Believers
- The presence of devils forces believers to stay alert, seek knowledge, and rely on Allah.
- It exposes hypocrites who claim faith but follow satanic whispers.
📖Surah Al-An‘am 6:113
This is so We may test them by it, and the hearts of those who disbelieve may incline toward it, and they may be pleased with it and commit what they are committing.
📖Surah Al-Furqan 25:20
And We made some of you a trial for others – will you have patience?
Qur’anic Context
📖Surah Al-A‘raf 7:27
Indeed, he [Shaytan] sees you, he and his tribe, from where you cannot see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.”
Devils (jinn) can see us while we cannot see them, making us vulnerable without Allah’s protection.
📖Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:97-98
And say: My Lord! I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.”
A clear command to seek protection from devils being present with us- especially in vulnerable situations like using the restroom.
Toilets are unclean environments, often carrying germs, parasites, and harmful bacteria. From a spiritual perspective, such places attract evil beings, while from a scientific perspective, they pose health risks. Seeking Allah’s protection ensures safety both spiritually and physically.
What Happens If Someone Says ‘I Seek Allah’s Refuge?
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 606
Ali ibn Abi Talib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A screen will be placed between the eyes of the Jinn and the nakedness of the children of Adam if one of them says as he enters the washroom: In the name of Allah.
Saying “I seek Allah’s refuge” or “In the name of Allah” before entering the washroom is an act of faith and trust in Allah. It shows that you believe in what the Prophet ﷺ taught and that you accept the unseen (such as the existence of Jinn). If a person believes in Allah and His Messenger, they naturally say these words because they know protection comes only from Allah, The Prophet ﷺ came at a time when people had turned away from worshipping the one true God, especially the Arabs who were deep in ignorance. He came with complete guidance – from A to Z – teaching us how to live our lives, from the greatest matters like worship to the smallest details like entering and leaving the washroom. This shows the perfection and comprehensiveness of Islam, If someone forgets to say these words or was never taught, this is not a sin that will lead them to Hell. Islam does not punish someone for forgetting or for lack of knowledge in such small matters. This action is a Sunnah – doing it brings reward, but leaving it out does not bring punishment, The main point is that saying this is an act of praising Allah and seeking His protection. It reflects belief, but it is not a condition of faith.
