Contentment with Allah, Islam, and the Prophet

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3389
Thawban reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever says when he enters the evening, ‘I am pleased with Allah as a Lord, with Islam as a religion, and with Muhammad as a prophet,’ it will be a duty upon Allah to please him.

This hadith teaches that when a believer sincerely declares their contentment with Allah, Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ, Allah takes it upon Himself to bring them peace and happiness. “A duty upon Allah” means His divine promise, not compulsion. Allah is the One who has written mercy for Himself and fulfills His promise when His servant shows loyalty and gratitude.

How Allah pleases such a person:

  1. Inner happiness: Allah fills their heart with peace, removing fear and sadness.
  2. Family harmony: A believer who prays and remembers Allah leads their family by example. Soon the household joins in prayer, and joy spreads within the family.
  3. Blessings in life: Whether in health, provision, or relationships, Allah sends goodness as a result of their faith.
  4. Collective peace: One person’s devotion can influence an entire family to remain under Allah’s command, and that itself becomes a mercy.

Why this happens:
These words, being pleased with Allah, Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ, are not just a statement. They are an act of remembrance (dhikr) that brings the believer back to the Quran and Allah’s commands. By remembering Allah, they are living under His guidance, and it is this obedience that attracts mercy and blessings. So the source of all the happiness, peace, and harmony is Allah alone, and the credit belongs only to Him.

Quranic context:

📖Quran 13:28
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.

📖Quran 16:97
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer—We will surely cause them to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward according to the best of what they used to do.

📖Quran 14:7
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]…’

This hadith is directly tied to the Quran. When a believer says these words, they are practicing remembrance and gratitude, just as Allah commanded. That remembrance leads to peace of heart, blessings in life, and happiness for the family. All of it flows only from Allah, who is the source of mercy and the giver of peace.
