Do Not Become Angry

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6116
Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Advise me.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Do not become angry and furious.” The man repeated the request several times, and each time the Prophet ﷺ responded, “Do not become angry and furious.”

This hadith highlights a profound psychological and spiritual teaching of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ could have given many pieces of advice, but he chose to repeat one: control your anger. He knew that anger is a root cause of destruction in relationships, behavior, and faith, and overcoming it is key to self-discipline and righteousness.

What We Learn Today:

  1. Anger is the Gateway to Sin:
From abusive words to violent actions, most sins between people begin with uncontrolled anger. Islam teaches self-restraint as a spiritual strength.
  2. Controlling Anger is Real Strength:
As the Prophet ﷺ said in another narration, “The strong one is not the one who defeats others in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when he is angry.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6114)
  3. Anger Destroys Relationships:
Whether in family, marriage, friendship, or society – anger breaks bonds. The Prophet ﷺ gave advice that preserves peace and harmony.
  4. Anger Blocks Guidance:
In anger, a person stops thinking clearly. It clouds judgment and makes the heart blind to Allah’s commands.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 3:134
Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship, and those who restrain anger and pardon the people, and Allah loves the doers of good.
Restraining anger is a quality that earns Allah’s love and is a mark of the righteous.

📖Quran 41:34
Good and evil are not equal. Repel [evil] with what is better; then the one you were enemies with will become as close as a devoted friend.
Responding to provocation with goodness instead of anger can transform relationships.

📖Quran 42:37
And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive.
The righteous are those who know how to turn anger into forgiveness, not revenge.

The Prophet ﷺ didn’t just say “don’t get angry” he repeated it again and again, showing us that mastering anger is one of the most important keys to inner peace, self-control, and earning Allah’s pleasure.
