The Prohibition of Fighting Each Others
📖Sahih Muslim 98
It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar that the Prophet ï·º said: “He who took up arms against us is not of us.”
Description:
This hadith is a clear warning against Muslims turning on one another, especially through violence, rebellion, or civil war. The Prophet ï·º rejects those who harm the Muslim community from within. But the meaning extends further: Islam is not about hostility or creating chaos, even with non-Muslims. Taking up arms against peaceful people, Muslim or not, is a betrayal of Islamic values.
Islam commands justice, peace, and security, not violence and rebellion. The Prophet ﷺ lived in Madinah with Jews, pagans, and hypocrites, yet he didn’t call for their destruction unless they betrayed peace or declared war. That’s the standard.
- A true Muslim doesn’t fight fellow Muslims out of pride, politics, or sectarianism.
- A true believer does not initiate violence, even against non-Muslims who live in peace.
- Islam forbids internal division and rebellion that damages unity and public safety.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 49:9
If two groups among the believers fight, make peace between them. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the command of Allah.
This shows that fighting is only to stop oppression — not to fuel ego or political division.
📖Quran 5:32
Whoever kills a person—unless for retribution or spreading corruption—it is as if he has killed all mankind.
Taking up arms unjustly, especially within the community, is a crime as serious as mass murder.
📖Quran 60:8
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes, from being righteous toward them and acting justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This proves peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims is not only allowed, it is praised by Allah.
📖Quran 8:61
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
If even non-Muslims seek peace, Islam commands accepting it.
Summary:
Taking up arms against fellow Muslims or peaceful non-Muslims contradicts Islam. The Prophet ï·º said “not of us” meaning such a person has stepped outside the core values of Islam: unity, justice, and peace. The Qur’an supports this through clear verses calling for peace, justice, and restraint, not violence or rebellion.
