Joy of Being Praised for Good Deeds
Sahih Muslim 2642 a
Abu Dharr reported: It was said to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ): What is your opinion about the person who has done good deeds and the people praise him? He said: It is glad tidings for a believer (which he has received in this mortal world).
Understanding the Hadith
This hadith highlights an important aspect of good deeds: the recognition and praise a person receives for their righteous actions can be a sign of Allah’s pleasure and a good indication of their sincerity.
🔹 1. Praise from Others is a Good Sign
- When people genuinely recognize and appreciate someone’s good deeds, it can be seen as an early reward from Allah in this world.
- It does not mean that seeking praise should be the goal, but when praise comes naturally and without seeking it, it is a positive sign.
- Quran 46:13 – “Indeed, those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remain steadfast, no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.”
- This verse shows that steadfast believers are honored both in this world and in the Hereafter.
🔹 2. Good Deeds Should Be Done for Allah, Not for Praise
- The hadith does not encourage doing good just to seek praise, as that would lead to showing off which is condemned in Islam.
- 📖Surah Al-Baqarah (2:264)
“O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day.” - This means that while praise can be a good sign, a believer should check their intentions to ensure that their actions are done only for Allah.
🔹 3. Praise Can Be a Test
- While praise can be a glad tiding, it can also be a test from Allah to see whether a person becomes arrogant or remains humble.
- Quran 53:32 – “So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He knows best who is righteous.”
- A believer should thank Allah for any praise they receive and use it as motivation to continue doing good.
🔹 4. Praise is Different from Seeking Fame
- Receiving praise for good deeds is natural and can be a sign of Allah’s acceptance.
- Seeking fame and recognition intentionally, however, is dangerous and can lead to hypocrisy.
- Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari 6689 & Sahih al-Bukhari 6499):
- “Actions are judged by intentions, and everyone will be rewarded according to what they intended.”
