Uncivil behavior is a barrier to Paradise

📖Sunan Abi Dawud 4801
Harithah b. Wahab reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying : neither the Jawwaz nor the Jazari will enter paradise. He said that the Jawwaz is the one who is coarse and uncivil.

  • This hadith from Sunan Abi Dawud reports that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that neither the Jawwaz nor the Jazari will enter Paradise. The Jawwaz is described as a coarse and uncivil person, while the Jazari is someone who constantly argues and quarrels with others. This hadith emphasizes the importance of good manners and avoiding rude behavior and argumentation in order to attain Paradise. It also serves as a reminder that our actions and behavior in this life have consequences in the afterlife.
Qur’anic References on Uncivil Behavior:
  1. Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11-12):
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them… And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames… O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other.”

    • This verse strongly condemns mockery, insults, and arrogance, which are traits of an uncivil person.
  2. Surah Al-Ahzab (33:58):
“And those who harm believing men and believing women for something other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.”

    • Harmful and offensive behavior is seen as a grave sin in Islam, reinforcing the hadith’s warning against uncivil conduct.
  3. Surah Al-Furqan (25:63):
“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.”

    • This verse highlights that a true believer is not rude or quarrelsome but responds to rudeness with patience and dignity.

Islamic Teaching on Good Manners:

  • Paradise is reserved for those who exhibit good character and civility.
  • Rudeness, arrogance, and unnecessary quarrels lead to spiritual downfall.
  • The Qur’an commands believers to be humble, respectful, and patient in speech and behavior.

This hadith, supported by Qur’anic verses, serves as a powerful reminder that good manners and civility are essential for attaining Allah’s mercy and entering Paradise.
